Earlier this month, Apple launched its first over-the-ear headphones, AirPods Max. While its price — Rs 59,900 — has been one of the biggest talking points, the case which comes with AirPods Max has been the subject of curiosity as well as some ridicule. Apple’s design philosophy has always been edgier than competition and in an interview with a Japanese news site, the company has explained the logic behind AirPods Max case. In the interview, Eugene Whang, industrial designer, Bob Borchers, VP of product marketing, and Evans Hankey, Apple’s VP of industrial design, spoke about AirPods Max at length.
The executives said that the primary reason behind the AirPods Max case design was to make it storage efficient. “Today, most headphones come with large, cumbersome cases, but we travel a lot, so we know how important it is to fit in a bag.”
Further, Apple said that the case “case has a structure in which one sheet is cut out and fastened in several places so that it becomes three-dimensional.”
The AirPods Max case in unlike any other headphones case for sure. Jokes, memes about it have been plenty but Apple says that the ease of use is second to none and is really strong. “When the ear cup is rotated and inserted here, the headband is exposed. Although it is still in the state, it is judged that it is not necessary to cover it because it is made strong in the first place,” the company executives said in the interview.
The band becomes like a holder to cary the headphones and Apple explained why it’s made like that. “Thanks to the exposed band, it is possible to have a function that you can easily grasp it with your hand and take it out of the bag,” as per the company.
