NEW DELHI: The Indian cricket board (BCCI) has informed the IPL franchises that thy will have to wait till December to know if there is going to be a mega auction for the next season. There are talks that the BCCI could induct a new team for the next season.
“Few IPL franchises approached the BCCI to seek clarity on the issue. They were told that they will be get a much clearer idea in the second half December,” a BCCI official told TOI.
TOI has learnt that the franchises are divided over the idea of having a mega auction for the next season which is barely four months away. The reports of adding a ninth team has got them worried. “Most of the teams have formed a core. They want to build on it. For most part of this IPL, there was a consensus that a major auction was not needed. However, there are a couple of teams who have expressed their wish that board holds an auction,” the official added.
Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to benefit the most if the auctions happen. CSK, as MS Dhoni pointed after their last game, is looking at an overhaul and form a core that would last for some years. SRH too are short on Indian talent. For them to rebuild, they would need more players available than what they would get in a transfer window.
Need to have IPL in Ahmedabad
BCCI is very keen to stage big matches at the renovated Motera stadium in Ahmedabad in the next year. The board had planned an IPL All Stars game for this season to inaugurate the stadium in the summer. However, with the ICC T20 World Cup to be hosted in India, the board is keen to have more marquee matches at the venue before the tournament. “Ahmedabad should be an important venue for the T20 World Cup. Few IPL games besides the scheduled Test match against England in February at the stadium will only help,” the BCC official said.
