While it may have premiered in Toronto’s Platform strand, The Beast Movie is likely to play well at a wider festival. It strikes a savvy art-horror balance that should make it suitable for midnight berths and less genre-inclined programs. While its commercial position is unclear, Pearce’s debut features too much accomplishment to be ignored by a specialized distributor. Here are some reasons to see the film, including its excellent cast and impressive performance.
In The Beast Movie, Jessie Buckley gives a breakout performance as Moll, an unknowing character who struggles against the shame spiral that her mother has forced upon her. As she reaches for a fly, a small Pascal’s fly, in a forest glade, her body subsides into a strange blankness and then explodes out in tremulous quivering need. The audience knows that the film is about a woman whose petty anger has turned her into a beast and that Moll is destined to go through hell, and the film takes its time to build a strong character out of her wrath.
The film is a character study, and while director Michael Pearce tries to make a movie about a character that feels like it’s out of place in Jersey, the cast of “Beast” succeeds in doing so by crafting a claustrophobic world of its own. Though there are a few problems with the story and the contrivances that make the film feel forced, Buckley’s powerful performance keeps Moll grounded and primal when needed.
Thalapathy Vijay is all set to appear in the gangster thriller Beast. The film is produced by Sun Pictures and features Anirudh Ravichandran as the music composer. The cast of the film is a who’s who of the Tamil film industry. Vijay’s father is actor Ravi Raghavendra and his great-grandfather is legendary director K. Subrahmanyam. In school, Anirudh played in a band and even won a competition judged by A. R. Rahman. In London, he studied classical piano and composed music for 3 films and more than two dozen Tamil films.
Vijay and Anirudh have been collaborating on many projects. “Beast” is Anirudh’s third movie with Vijay. The composer is working on a sequel to K.G.F. Chapter 2 which will be released in India on April 14.
Vijay’s next film, Beast, is a thriller that centers on Veera Raghava and his kidnapping. The film is produced by Dil Raju’s Sri Venkateswara Creations and directed by Manoj Paramahamsa. Pooja Hegde, Shine Tom Chacko, and Anirudh are also in the cast. Manoj Paramahamsa is behind the camera and Nirmal is handling the cuts. The soundtrack is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
Among the stars, Pooja Hegde makes her comeback to Tamil cinema after nine years. This movie is a must watch for fans of Vijay Thalapathy and Anirudh Ravichandran. The music score by Anirudh Ravichandran is excellent. The camerawork by Manoj Paramahamsa is outstanding. The movie will be released in theatres in December and January, so don’t wait!
