According to the publisher, it is “An exquisite love story of a king and a commoner, a cautionary tale about loyalty and betrayal, and a powerful parable of the indestructible bond between mother and child, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s unforgettable novel brings alive one of the most fearless women of the nineteenth century, an inspiration for our times.”
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a renowned Indian American author and poet. ‘Arranged Marriage’, her first collection of stories won an American Book Award, a PEN Josephine Miles Award, and a Bay Area Book Reviewers Award. Since then she has written several novels and some have been bestsellers. She was also a TOI Write India author in the second season of the contest.
On her upcoming book she said, “I am delighted to be partnering with HarperCollins to bring the amazing and largely-forgotten Maharani Jindan Kaur to readers. From the beginning, I was struck by her strength and unfaltering courage even as she goes through the worst challenges of her life. Delightfully human with her faults and foibles, the resolute Jindan has been an inspiring companion to me through these troubled times. I trust she will do the same for all who pick up this book. I am additionally excited because the book has already been optioned by Endemol Shine for a movie.”
This will not be her first written work to be adapted. Her book The ‘Mistress of Spices’ was released as a film in 2005, starring Aishwarya Rai and Dylan McDermott. Her book ‘Sister of my Heart’ was made into a Tamil television series by the name of Anbulla Snegithiye (Loving Friend). Other works have been adapted into plays and/or had their film rights sold.
The book is being published by HarperCollins India and will be released on 22 January 2021.
