Defer Pulse polio drive for now: Centre to states | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Centre has asked all states to defer annual Pulse polio drive scheduled to take place from January 17 till further notice. The move comes in the wake of the launch of the massive vaccination drive against Covid-19 on January 16.
“It is being deferred only for the time being keeping in mind the massive immunisation exercise for Covid. This is unprecedented and since both the dates were so close, we have asked the states to hold the polio drive for the time being,” an official said.
The polio vaccination drive is conducted in January every year, with a second round in the second half of the year.
“This is with reference to the letter dated on 19.11.2020 regarding the schedule of date of polio national immunisation day (NID) round. In this regard, this is to inform that due to unforeseen activities, it is decided to postpone the scheduled polio NID round from January 17 2021 till further notice,” the health ministry said. The health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that though some changes in some scheduled programme may take place temporarily but no compromise will be made in existing healthcare services. tnn
