New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi’s assertion that the agenda of development and women “silently” voting for BJP played a significant role in the party’s victory in Bihar and state bypolls is a message to the opposition that voters prefer “politics of performance” over political scraps on day-to-day happenings, BJP leaders said.
In his speech at the BJP headquarters on Wednesday, Modi said development of the country and states was the biggest criterion and would be the key poll issue. “Those who failed to understand this fact lost deposits at different places in these elections,” he said, an apparent dig at Congress which won just 19 of 70 seats it contested.
BJP sources said Congress lost deposits in four out of six assembly seats it contested in UP — Bulandshahr, Malhani, Naugawan Sadat and Deoria. The last is the seat of UP Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu. The party lost deposits in four seats in Bihar too, in Chainpur, Paroo, Nalanda and Harnaut.
“Congress put up a historically bad performance in the recent polls. The party made a lot of noise about Hathras and other issues in UP. Lot of narratives were also floated about Priyanka Gandhi’s connection with UP. However, of the six seats they contested, Congress lost deposits in four,” a BJP leader said, adding that it showed the limits of divisive politics. BJP would like to read the poll outcomes as a verdict on Rahul Gandhi’s personalised attacks on the PM, referring to him as a “coward” in context of the India-China military standoff.
