Kalum Sri was born on 11 May 1944 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He is the son of a film actor and a school teacher. He was educated at St. John’s College, Chennai, and explored various career options after completing his bachelor’s degree. He did not do any serious film work for a long time, opting for a career in education. Kalum Sri made his acting debut in the film “Alagattachul Vedan” (1972) as an extra. He got his first lead role in the 1972 film “Thilagam”. The film was a big hit and became one of the highest-grossing films of 1972. He followed it with two more hit films – “Sarasuram” (1973) and “Ei Kavithal” (1973). In 1975, he appeared in his first full-length Telugu film “Shanaya” as a villainous character. He acted in another 100 films in the Tamul language and another 100 in other languages. After a four-decade career as an actor, he retired from the active screen in 2004 after playing the lead role in a television serial.

He made his debut in the Malayalam film “Sleeping Beauty” (1963). His other notable Malayalam films include “Pulimuriyo”, “Pulimani”, “Thaliparambu” and “Vettathuvil”. In Tamil, he acted in many films like “Chandramukhi”, “Enakku Enakku”, “Paathoenakkae”, “Nadodarangam” and “Achchamoote”. After that, he acted in Kannada films like “Kalakalikki”, “Tarkarakkal”, “Sri Kavithal” and “Chandike”. Kalum Sri has acted in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films. In the Tamil film “Chandramukhi”, he became a playback singer after retiring from acting. in the Hindi film “Kalakalikki” he got the role of an old man after he retired from acting. He was a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, the highest award given by the Kerala government, in 2001 for his novel “Enakku Enakku”. He was also awarded the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor in 1965 for his film “Thilagam”.
