The story begins in modern day Scotland, where a young girl named Makatu is captured by the evil lioness Shimoba. She is destined to serve her until she becomes an adult and can leave the forest. When she finally does, she vows never to go back to Africa ever again. This causes problems for her father who wants her to continue on with her plans.
As an orphan, she has to attend the school called the lion sanctuary where the young lions are trained to be obedient. There she slowly starts to trust people, especially the headmaster Mr. Collins who seems to have a good influence on her. He tries to help her overcome some of her fears such as going on a picnic with lions. However one day he kisses her and accidentally let her fall into a vat full of boiling acid.
Afterward, the King of the Lions comes to see what has happened and makes orders for all the men of the kingdom to capture the lioness and take her back to his home. However this attracts more lions and other beasts to attack Africa. An army is assembled to defeat the beast. Finally Makatu and Collins escape through a tunnel. But not before the lioness regains consciousness and kills the King of the Lions with a knife. Now on her way to freedom, she vows never to turn into a lion again, but as she sneaks around the camp she finds that her own son has also escaped from the lion enclosure and is wandering the wilderness.
