NHAI junks paper communication, goes digital | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has gone digital for all its official communication with contractors, consultants and officials. Now all such communication needs to be uploaded by all the stakeholders on the web-link created by the Authority.
NHAI chairman S S Sandhu told TOI that now all official documents and communications are available online to the contractors or concessionaires, consultants and also for NHAI officials. “There is no question of anything going missing. This will help improve our functioning and make us more efficient in dealing with issues. Sitting here I can access any file and monitor the progress and actions taken,” he said.
In the past, there had been several instances when the contractors or concessionaires produced documents issued by field officials, which could not be traced in the NHAI’s files. Officials admitted that this often led to concessionaires and contractors to raise claims or initiate disputes.
“This was one of the reasons why this project (Data Lake) was conceived. This will put an end to several malpractices as none can make any changes in the uploaded communications. The details can be accessed only by the officials responsible for particular projects and the top level officials. This will make officials responsible and contractors or concessionaires cannot dispute what’s there on the online system,” said an official. He added that seniors in the hierarchy can quickly identify which official is holding back decisions.
In this system, all project documents and correspondences are stored in digital format in the cloud-based ‘Data Lake’ linked with GIS tagging and unique project ID. All contractors, concessionaires, consultants, authority engineers, independent engineers and NHAI’s project directors and regional officers have started using it.
