Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal was conferred with the Vatayan Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday.
The award – given by the Vatayan-UK organisation in London – honours poets, writers and artists for exemplary work in their respective fields.
Receiving the award, he highlighted that unity in diversity is the hallmark of India and emphasised how writing strengthens civilisation and culture of the country. He said the ‘Vatayan Samman’ is a recognition for not only his writings and literature but also for Indian values and tradition. He said his writings were related to his experiences and have sought to give voice to the poor and the oppressed.
Eminent personalities like Prasoon Joshi and Javed Akhtar have received the award earlier for their literary contribution. This award is the latest among other national and international literary honours conferred on the minister.
The German version ‘Nur Ein Wunsch” of Pokhriyal’s story collection ‘Just a Desire’ was published by the Afro Asian Institute, Hamburg. His ‘Sparsh Ganga’ initiative was included in Mauritius school curriculum. Pokhriyal has penned over 75 books on wide ranging issues, which have also been translated into many national and foreign languages.
