Pongal is here and it’s all about celebrating the new harvest season with new hopes. The festival includes yummy food and spending some quality time with family. Here are 5 Tamil film songs that featured Pongal with the whole sentiments of the festival intact.

As much as Kamal Haasan’s ‘Happy New Year’ song from ‘Sakalakala Vallavan’ is associated with New Year, the ‘Pongalo Pongal’ song from ‘Mahanadhi’ has a special place during the harvest festival. The song is all about being with your loved ones and gathering around in new clothes and welcoming the spirit of a festival. It’s heartwarming to say the least.

The song ‘Vanthenda Paalakaran’ is a famous song set in Pongal and played during Pongal. Lyrics written by Vairamuthu, the song is said to be inspired from a Kannada poem about cows which Rajini had suggested. The poem is about the cow which is a deity and useful to humans.

The Thai Pirandhadhu song from ‘Kattalai’ featuring Sathyaraj and Bhanupriya is another harvest festival song. Music for the song is by Ilayaraja and sung by Mano. Lyrics for the song are by Vaali.

Margazhi thaan odi pochu song from Thalapathy is another hit song that is played mostly during the Bhogi and Pongal festival. The song is crooned by  SP Balasurbamaniyam, Swarnalatha and Chorus. This song is also composed by Ilayaraja and has the native flavour written all over it.

Apart from the above mentioned song, there are also the ‘Kombula poova Suthi’ and ‘Podhuvaga En Manasu’ from Virumandi and Murattu Kaalai which brings out the flavour of the Jallikattu events that are usually held during the Pongal festival.
